Traffic gridlocked in Ukraine's capital as Russian drone strikes close key bridge

Ukraine has long feared an attack on its major transportation bridges since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Overnight on October 2, Russian forces struck civilian targets across Ukraine, killing at least two people and injuring 27 others, as reported by local authorities. In the frontline city of Kramatorsk, a passenger bus was targeted by a first-person-view (FPV) drone, causing injuries to two individuals traveling on a routine morning journey.

The drone attack was reported by the Kramatorsk City Council. Russian troops have continued to target civilian transport, striking people engaged in regular activities, according to the statement.

In addition to the bus attack in Kramatorsk, Russian forces launched a total of 108 Shahed-type attack drones overnight, including 47 jet-powered versions. Ukrainian air defenses successfully shot down or suppressed 88 of these drones, while strikes were recorded at 11 locations, according to Ukraine's Air Force. Debris from downed drones was found at five locations.

President Zelensky reported that Russian strikes targeted apartment buildings in Kramatorsk and Sumy, while attacks were also reported in Dnipro, Odesa, Kharkiv, Kyiv, Poltava, and Rivne oblasts. In Kyiv, Shahed drones hit the Pivdennyi Bridge multiple times. The Russian forces also attacked a residential high-rise in the morning, a kindergarten in Kherson, a grocery store and institute in Kharkiv, and caused damage to critical infrastructure.

As of October 2, Russian attacks in eastern Donetsk Oblast killed one person and injured four others, according to regional governor Vadym Filashkin. In Kyiv, a Russian attack overnight resulted in one death and two injuries when a 25-story residential building was damaged in the Darnytskyi district. In southern Kherson Oblast, Russian attacks injured seven people, reported regional governor Oleksandr Prokudin.

Northeastern Kharkiv Oblast witnessed Russian attacks on the city and surrounding settlements, causing injuries to six people, as stated by regional governor Oleh Syniehubov. Russian attacks on Dnipropetrovsk Oblast resulted in four injuries in Pavlohrad, according to regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha.

In the northeastern Sumy Oblast, Russian drone strikes injured two men, reported regional authorities. In southeastern Zaporizhzhia Oblast, Russia carried out 741 attacks on 51 settlements, but no civilians were injured, as reported by regional authorities.
