Taiwan receives its first US-made F-16V fighter jets

Taiwan received its first F-16V fighter jets from the United States on Friday, marking a significant upgrade in its military capabilities. The two aircraft, manufactured by US defense contractor Lockheed Martin, touched down at Taiwan's air force base in Taitung, located on the island's southeast coast under a clear sky. The delivery is part of an $8 billion deal for 66 F-16Vs, approved during President Donald Trump's first term and scheduled for delivery this year.

The arrival of these jets comes as Taiwan awaits approval for an additional $14 billion in arms from the US, a package that President Trump paused due to concerns over China's objections. Chinese officials claim Taiwan is part of their territory and have threatened to use force to seize it.

Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te hailed the new aircraft as a major milestone in elevating the island's air defense capabilities and expressed gratitude for the US's long-standing support. The jets had been expected to arrive in early September after refueling stops in Hawaii and Guam, but turned back to Hawaii shortly after takeoff. Local residents gathered near the airbase's perimeter to watch the jets' arrival, with many expressing optimism about the improved hardware capabilities.

Despite the delays, locals still believe that the new fighter jets will play a crucial defensive role against China's threats. Military experts emphasize that the F-16V's advanced combat, detection, and engine capabilities will significantly enhance Taiwan's defense against potential Chinese aggression.
