Taiwan gender-row boxer Lin Yu-ting wins Asian Games gold

Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting, who faced controversy over her gender eligibility at the 2024 Paris Olympics, secured a gold medal at the Asian Games on Wednesday. Lin defeated China’s Yang Chengyu 5-0 in the women’s 60kg final in Nagoya, marking her second Asian Games gold. The 30-year-old, who had previously won in the 57kg category at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games, dominated the bout thanks to her superior reach.

Lin expressed earlier that she contemplated retirement after her Olympic triumph but wanted to continue fighting to challenge those who doubted her eligibility. In 2023, Lin and Algerian boxer Imane Khelif were disqualified by the International Boxing Association (IBA) for failing unspecified gender eligibility tests. However, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) allowed them to compete in Paris, deeming them victims of the IBA’s "sudden and arbitrary decision."

Both Lin and Khelif won gold at the Olympics, but the IOC’s decision has been widely criticized. Lin, along with China’s Olympic champion Wu Yu, who defended her title in the 51kg class, secured gold at the Asian Games.
