Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim wants the discussion on Islamic finance to be translated into fundamentals, products and practices that benefit society, rather than remaining merely a topic of prestige. Speaking at the International Shariah Research and Development (iSHAR) 2026 Roundtable Discussion today, he emphasized that the position of Malaysia as one of the pioneers in the global Islamic finance ecosystem should not be seen solely as a matter of prestige.

Instead, he stressed that the world needs a financial system grounded in ethics, fairness and ihsan (excellence).

Anwar stressed that the platform needs to bridge the gap between dialogue and implementation. He urged to climb the ladder towards implementation and ensure that the fruits of ideas generated here are translated into fundamentals, products and practices that can uplift the dignity and protect the society. The remarks were echoed by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department for Religious Affairs Zulkifli Hasan.

He stressed that the issue of Islamic finance is not just a technical issue, but also touches upon moral aspects of how the financial system should serve humanity. "How can we ensure that finance serves humanity and not humanity being enslaved by finance," he asked. Malaysia is known as one of the pioneers in the global Islamic finance ecosystem, but this status should not be seen merely as a matter of prestige.

Instead, the world needs a financial system anchored in ethics, justice, and ihsan, Anwar said. He added that Malaysia's Madani framework demands a balance between economic growth and moral responsibility, including between profit and the broader goal of higher purpose.
