Penang Free School marks 210 years with push for digital transformation

George Town, Oct 2 — The Penang Free School (PFS), reputedly the oldest English-medium institution in Southeast Asia, is commemorating its 210th anniversary this year. Organising Committee chair Ivan Ooi Jieun Vei stated that the milestone occasion also serves as an opportunity to bolster the school's digital capabilities to adequately equip students for the evolving educational and technological landscape.

Mr Ooi emphasized that the anniversary celebrations marked a call to action for the entire Penang Free School community to unite and invest in the school's future. He urged alumni, educators, industry professionals and the community to contribute towards the school's digital transformation endeavours. "We aim to leverage the strengths of our alumni, educators, industry and the community to ensure that students not only excel academically but also develop into future professionals, innovators and leaders," he added.

The PFS Digital Transformation Fund focuses on strengthening digital infrastructure, improving educators' capabilities and exposing students to STEM, artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, coding and new digital technologies. As of September 28, the fund had procured 13 75-inch Hisense Smartboards, out of a target of 33 units to be installed throughout the school.

Ooi clarified that the fund is not intended to replace government funding, but rather to supplement it and accelerate the school's development. "Our objective is not merely to acquire technology, but to invest in capabilities, opportunities and, ultimately, in the talent development that will underpin Penang's future economy," he concluded.

The highlight of the anniversary celebration is the 210th Anniversary Dinner at PFS tomorrow, from 6pm to 11.30pm, featuring a special performance by Malaysia's Queen of Rock, Ella, alongside performances by PFS students.
