The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) Mumbai successfully dismantled a gold and diamond smuggling syndicate, arresting eight individuals in a recent operation. Among those apprehended were six transit passengers from Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, along with two Sri Lankan nationals. The seized contraband included diamonds valued at Rs 1.10 crore and gold worth Rs 12.64 crore.

The arrested individuals, identified as M.S. Lowna Balli, S.K. Ansari, Shahadat Hossain, Mubarak Hossen, Mohammad Jual, Muhammad Mijanuddin, Mohamed Rifas, and Mohamed Anwar Aashiq Hasaan, have been placed in judicial custody. Intelligence informed the DRI of S.K. Ansari's involvement in the syndicate, leading to his identification at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai.

During the operation, the DRI intercepted Balli and Ansari at the airport's washroom, where Ansari was providing a brown-taped packet to the former. Personal searches of the suspects revealed the smuggled goods. The passengers, upon questioning, confessed to working for the same smuggling syndicate and had been instructed to hand over gold to Ansari.

They further revealed their travel routes from Dubai to various countries via Mumbai. The DRI seized the smuggled goods, highlighting a duty evasion exceeding Rs 50 lakh.
