Keurig’s new machine uses plastic-free compressed coffee pucks

Keurig Alta is a new single-serve coffee system that replaces plastic K-Cup pods with compostable compressed coffee tablets called AltaRounds. These tablets are brewed using a specialized Keurig Alta machine, which determines the correct brew style, pressure, and temperature based on a recipe code printed on the tablet. The AltaRounds are unique in that they feature a thin plant-based coating to maintain freshness, prevent breakage during shipping, and generate brewing pressure.

Unlike Lavazza's Tabli system, which only produces espresso, the Keurig Alta machine can make a variety of coffee and espresso drinks, including lattes and cappuccinos, thanks to its integrated milk frother. The machine's color screen guides users through various beverage options. The switch to AltaRounds will be gradual, with K-Cups remaining available for a while.

Initially, Keurig will offer six AltaRounds varieties, including Single Shot, Double Shot, Bold Ambition, The House, Fresh Take, and Sweet Spot. Peet's Coffee AltaRounds will also be available soon. The packaging consists of an SFI-certified paperboard carton and a plant-based coating made from seaweed harvested off the coast of France.

The AltaRounds are fully compostable, including the coffee and coating, and can be disposed of like regular coffee grounds. A limited early access bundle, priced at $499.99 and shipping on October 21, includes a Keurig Alta brewer, four boxes of AltaRounds, and glassware designed by FLUR.
