Joey Fodstad, a 26-year-old junior hockey coach and general manager, has joined the Willmar WarHawks. Fodstad replaces former GM and head coach Payton Ruter, who served in these positions for three seasons. The WarHawks begin their NA3HL season this weekend, facing the Minnesota Vulcans on Friday and the Granite City Lumberjacks on Saturday, both games on the road.
Fodstad, born in Rogers, previously worked at Concordia-Moorhead before joining the WarHawks. He leads a team that finished fifth in the West Division last season with a 19-26-2-0 record. Co-captains Elliot Domagala and Tanner Lozano, along with assistant captains Aiden Hogan and Wyatt Garvey, aim to lead the team back to the playoffs for the first time since 2024-25. Domagala and Hogan return for their third season, while Lozano, Garvey, and Aiden Dame are back for their second.
Fodstad praised the locker room leadership, stating that the team is accountable, detail-oriented, and will play a fast, skilled, and physical style of hockey. He believes the season will be successful. For the start of the season, Fodstad will have four goalies: Asher Wold, Tate Metcalf, Chris Ernster, and Noah Germain. Wold is from Washington with no NA3HL experience, while Metcalf, Ernster, and Germain all have some league experience.
