GAPTE must stick to advertised times for the contra-flow system – Local Minister

The Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, has instructed the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE) and Aayalolo bus managers to adhere to the advertised times for the new contra-flow system. Ayariga emphasized that the implementation of the contra-flow initiative, which commenced two days prior, should foster a positive perspective on time management.

At a breakfast meeting with development partners and heads of governance agencies on October 1, Ayariga cautioned that if the "business as usual" approach where drivers waited for passengers before departing was tolerated, the purpose of the initiative would not be realized. He urged the GAPTE Manager to ensure that buses depart at the scheduled times, regardless of passenger load.

Ayariga highlighted that over time, people will adapt to the consistent departure times and adjust their schedules accordingly, effectively changing behaviors for the better. He recalled a trip to Japan 15 years ago, noting the punctuality of trains that leave exactly at specified times. The Local Government Ministry launched the contra-flow traffic management system two days ago, aiming to expedite Aayalolo BRT services in key corridors leading to Accra's Central Business District during peak hours.

The initiative, in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service's Motor Traffic and Transport Department and the Department of Urban Roads, covers three main commuter routes: Amasaman–Accra, Adentan–Accra, and Kasoa–Accra. During peak periods, selected sections of these routes will enable authorized Aayalolo BRT buses to travel in the opposite direction of regular traffic.

GAPTE's Managing Director, Dawuda Awudu, explained during a press conference that the contra-flow system would alleviate persistent traffic congestion in the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area. He stated that the initiative's success relies on efficient transportation to support economic activities during non-standard hours.
