Former Atletico Madrid coach questions Mbappe’s leadership credentials at Real Madrid: ‘Never fits into the team’

Atletico Madrid coach German Burgos has cast doubt on the leadership capabilities of Kylian Mbappe as he plays for Real Madrid. Speaking on Iker Casillas’ YouTube channel, Burgos highlighted what he perceives as a gap between Mbappe’s individual brilliance and his capacity to function within a team environment. "Mbappe never really fits into the team.

It’s as if there were 10 players and just one of him. So it’s difficult. I don’t see him as a leader like Messi," he asserted. "He’s a leader for himself, for that moment and for that spot. But there are 10 others." Burgos did not challenge Mbappe’s individual skills, instead suggesting that the French star could become even more effective if he embraced a more collective approach.

He also made a direct comparison between Mbappe and his Real Madrid teammate Vinicius Jr., noting that while Mbappe is superior in overall ability, Vinicius possesses more team-oriented qualities. "For me, Mbappe is better than Vinicius, but Vinicius has a few more team-oriented qualities. Like saying, ‘Right, I’ll run a bit further to see if I can cut off that pass’."

Burgos' comments echo ongoing discussions about Mbappe’s ability to transition from an isolated superstar to a leader who can coordinate with his teammates. The comparison with Vinicius is particularly pertinent at Real Madrid, where both players must navigate a crowded attack featuring several elite forwards.
