In Benue State, at least 20 kidnapped victims, comprising women, from Tyomu community in Makurdi Local Government Area have been freed after a ransom payment of N8 million and the provision of foodstuffs and groceries worth over N500,000 to their captors. The victims were released on Thursday night in a forest near the Otukpo-Ogbadibo road, close to the Kogi State border, after days in captivity.
Simon Igidi, whose wife was among the kidnapped, shared the news with journalists in Makurdi. The freed victims arrived in Makurdi around midnight and were immediately taken to hospitals for medical care. An elderly woman was released on the same Friday as the kidnapping and returned home to Tyomu on Monday evening. The remaining 19 victims were freed following the payment of the ransom and distribution of food items.
The freed victims include eight women from Tyomu, three from Vandeikya, and nine from Wurukum area of Makurdi. PureBioTech Nigeria Limited donated N1 million to aid in the rehabilitation of the Tyomu victims, while the Chairman of Makurdi LGA, Joseph Keffi, contributed N1.5 million. Additionally, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Peter Aondongu, disclosed that the police command has not yet received the report.
