2D Barcode System Proposed to Curb Fake Veterinary Medicines

Federal Health Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal convened a meeting on Thursday with the Pakistan Veterinary Pharmaceutical Association to discuss the proposed introduction of a 2D barcode system and traceability mechanism for veterinary and poultry medicines. The aim of the initiative is to enhance the identification, monitoring, and traceability of these medicines, thereby strengthening protection against counterfeit and substandard products.

Minister Kamal emphasized the necessity of eliminating fake and substandard medicines, asserting that the 2D barcode system would ensure the safety, authenticity, and verifiability of these products throughout the supply chain. He noted that efforts to implement 2D barcodes on veterinary medicines have been underway for approximately one and a half years, and underscored the critical importance of robust regulation and monitoring.

The minister pointed out that medicines intended for animals have a direct impact on human health, making stringent quality control and regulatory oversight essential under the One Health approach. During the meeting, discussions also centered on fostering cooperation with the veterinary pharmaceutical sector and identifying measures required for the effective implementation of the traceability system.
