Turaco, VisionFund sign deal to expand microinsurance in Africa

Turaco and VisionFund International have agreed to collaborate in a global initiative to provide low-cost microinsurance for impoverished families in Africa. This Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) expands on the existing partnership between the two organizations in Kenya and Uganda, where their insurance products have reached approximately 250,000 people.

The deal entails extending insurance products through VisionFund's microfinance institutions and incorporating insurance into World Vision programs to assist families in coping with financial emergencies. Kenya and Uganda will continue to serve as the core markets, while Tanzania, Ghana, Zambia, and Rwanda are considered potential initial markets for further expansion.

In addition, the partnership will facilitate the development of products centered around preventive and outpatient healthcare to enable families to obtain medical care before health issues escalate into significant financial crises. Turaco and VisionFund will leverage VisionFund's expertise in Latin America and Asia to inform product development across their diverse markets.

Ted Pantone, Turaco's CEO and Co-Founder, emphasized that the partnership will build upon the successful model established in Kenya and Uganda, where insurance has been integrated into financial products that families already rely upon. Edgar Martinez, CEO of VisionFund International, highlighted that the global partnership aims to extend insurance coverage to more families confronted with challenges such as illness, death, disability, and climate-related events.

Martinez further stated that the collaboration will enable them to reach more families earlier, before a crisis occurs.
