Thibaut Courtois talks Mbappe, Ballon d’Or, Mourinho, Negreira controversy and Belgium absence

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois recently discussed a variety of topics in a lengthy interview with Onda Cero’s Radioestadio Noche, according to Diario AS. The Belgian international expressed his belief that the Ballon d’Or award should be awarded to the world's best player, regardless of whether they have won the most trophies.

Courtois specifically backed Kylian Mbappe for the prestigious award, citing the French forward's exceptional speed and goal-scoring ability. The Real Madrid star also reflected on the expectations that came with his move to the Bernabeu, noting that while winning the Champions League is a key goal, it should not be taken for granted.

Courtois discussed his previous tenure under Jose Mourinho at Chelsea, emphasizing that the Portuguese manager has remained true to his roots while evolving with age. He praised Mourinho's directness and ability to push players to their limits, even though Mourinho's demanding nature is more evident in private. The goalkeeper also tackled the controversial defeat to Atletico Madrid, attributing the loss to his team's shortcomings rather than the refereeing. Courtois firmly rejected the notion that the Madrid derby loss was due to bias against Real Madrid.

The goalkeeper also addressed the upcoming Negreira case, a refereeing scandal involving Barcelona that is set to go to trial in Spain. Courtois expressed concern over the seriousness of the situation and the pending verdict. Regarding his decision to step away from Belgium's international duties during the Nations League period, Courtois explained that he prioritizes his health and career longevity by focusing on Real Madrid.

He confirmed that he has discussed his choice with Mark van Bommel and intends to stay available for European Championship qualifiers. Courtois emphasized that Real Madrid not only pays his wages but also supports his long-term career goals.
