‘Shaka iLembe’ Season 3 gets first look – but no South African release date yet

StudioCanal has unveiled a sneak peek at the highly anticipated third season of the acclaimed Zulu-language drama, Shaka iLembe: Zulu King. The announcement was made on October 1, 2026, ahead of the Mipcom 2026 event in Cannes, France, where StudioCanal will be seeking international sales for the series. Produced by Bomb Productions for MultiChoice, a subsidiary of the Canal+ group, Shaka iLembe has captivated audiences with its origin story of King Shaka kaSenzangakhona, told in isiZulu by African filmmakers and historians.

The first two seasons of the series have set records in South Africa, becoming the highest-rated drama on DStv and the most-searched TV show in the country in 2023. Season 3 continues the narrative four years after the events of season 2, as Shaka's kingdom faces new external pressures such as British expansion and growing European influence.

This season also broadens its scope to include the emerging Basotho Kingdom of Moshoeshoe, King Faku's Mpondo Kingdom, and the settlement of Port Natal. Key additions to the cast include Lerato Mvelase as Queen Mpikase, Aiden Scott as Henry Francis Fynn, Conrad Kemp as Lt. Francis Farewell, and Wonder Ndlovu as Prince Mpande. Executive producer Desiree Markgraaff and star Nomzamo Mbatha, who plays Queen Nandi, have praised the series for its ambitious storytelling and its commitment to portraying Africa with dignity, complexity, and humanity.

The franchise will be introduced to international buyers at Mipcom 2026, with sales for season 3 commencing at London Screenings 2027.
