IKEA Picks Kodiak for Driverless Freight Rollout

Kodiak Robotics has made IKEA its pilot customer for a planned driverless long-haul trucking service, with a commercial launch scheduled before the end of 2025. The company has already been delivering IKEA freight daily from Houston to a distribution center near Frisco, Texas, for four years with a safety driver in the vehicle. Daniel Goff, Kodiak's vice president of external affairs, stated that IKEA was the top choice for launching the driverless service.

To enable a driverless rollout, Kodiak must complete a comprehensive safety case, which includes hardware fault analysis, simulation testing, and track verification, before removing the driver. This is being done without any federal or state regulatory standards to follow. PrePass, a company providing weigh-station bypass and compliance services to over 900,000 commercial vehicles, will integrate with Kodiak's autonomous trucks to relay pre-trip inspection data to enforcement officers.

The PrePass inspection standard requires a near-annual equivalent inspection every four days, with zero defects allowed. Kodiak and PrePass will initially launch the service in Texas and Louisiana, with expansion planned along other freight corridors. PrePass expects to save fleets more than $12 billion through fuel and time efficiencies, which will extend to autonomous trucks entering the system.
