‘He’s just God-given’: Mosimane wants more from Mofokeng at Bafana

Pitso Mosimane, Bafana Bafana's head coach, is confident in the talent of Relebohile Mofokeng, but he is urging the star to turn that ability into more goals. Mofokeng, who recently made his mark for South Africa by scoring two goals in their 5-0 win against Eritrea, has scored his first two senior caps in Cairo. His only prior goal for Bafana came in an overturned 2-0 victory over Lesotho in a World Cup qualifier. Mofokeng had been goalless in 17 appearances for the national team before his brace against Eritrea.

Recognizing Mofokeng's potential, Mosimane lauded the 21-year-old for his Europe-bound success, stating that his skills in Europe are what will ultimately propel him to score regularly. "Rele is a top player, he’s showing why he’s gone to Europe and he’s scoring by the way in Europe so he’s not just scoring for us and that’s the most important thing, Rele must score goals," Mosimane emphasized.

Since transferring from Orlando Pirates to Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, Mofokeng has proven his worth, netting four goals and providing one assist in nine appearances across competitions. Among his Belgian exploits, he scored three goals in the Belgian Pro League and netted in his Europa League debut against Viktoria Plzen. Mosimane emphasized that while Mofokeng is a "magician" and an "intelligent player," the coach's primary concern is to see him score goals consistently.

The coach's vision is clear: Mofokeng must marry his flair with greater goal-scoring consistency. As part of the new generation that Bafana aims to develop ahead of the 2030 World Cup, Mofokeng is expected to play a crucial role. At present, Mosimane's immediate goal is to continue producing high-quality performances from his star player.
