The Ministry of Health has reported on the progress of the shift from the Social Health Authority (SHA) Provider Portal to the Health Management Information System (HMIS) as Kenya strives for a fully digitized health information system. Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale stated that the transition has been successful, with all 6,427 public Level 2-4 health facilities now utilizing the HMIS.
Four public Level 5 facilities have completed the transition, while 23 are currently in various stages. The government anticipates all public Level 5 facilities to be fully transitioned by October 30, 2026. Additionally, the Ministry supports 518 contracted faith-based health facilities with the installation and transition to HMIS, with 38 facilities already fully transitioned, and the remaining expected to complete by October 30.
National Government Level 6 facilities, including Kenyatta National Hospital and Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital, are expected to complete their transitions by the end of next week, with the rest by October 30, 2026. Private health facilities with existing HMIS platforms have begun system certification in accordance with the Digital Health Act, with 28 platforms certified by the Digital Health Agency (DHA).
The DHA will provide technical support through Rapid Results Initiatives (RRI) to private health facilities throughout October to expedite the transition process. The Ministry assured the public that the transition will not disrupt access to healthcare services, as no patient will be denied treatment due to incomplete facility transitions.
An additional one-month extension has been granted to ensure complete compliance with the transition directive. The Ministry plans to meet with health sector associations on October 2, 2026, to finalize a facility-by-facility transition plan and address any outstanding requirements to maintain uninterrupted healthcare services during the migration.
