Focal Mu-so Hekla review: a potent, super-immersive wireless speaker in a sleek soundbar's clothing
Our review of the Focal Mu-so Hekla asks, among other things: when is a soundbar not a soundbar? And when is a Naim Mu-so speaker not a Naim Mu-so speaker?
The Focal Mu-so Hekla is a wireless speaker that resembles a soundbar, despite Focal claiming it is not one. The device, named after an active Icelandic volcano, is marketed as an immersive home cinema system by Focal and under the Focal powered by Naim brand. Its sleek design, featuring black aluminum casing and anodized heatsinks, gives it a visual appeal.
With 660 watts of power and 15 speaker drivers, the Hekla delivers a frequency response of 30Hz to 20kHz and supports 7.1.2-channel spatial audio. Connectivity options include digital optical input, HDMI eARC, dual-band Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, and compatibility with various music streaming services and casting methods. The device boasts an impressive control dial for adjusting spatial audio settings, EQ, and channel levels, along with the Focal & Naim control app for granular control.
The device's adaptive room correction and spatial audio algorithms aim to optimize sound in any environment, regardless of the input.
