The historic No. 7 jersey of Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo has been transferred to their new star, Rafael Leao. This significant change came following Ronaldo's unexpected departure from the national team camp. The Portugal squad released by UEFA confirmed that Leao has inherited the iconic jersey. Fans of Ronaldo are shocked and show little respect, speculating that Ronaldo may retire from international football following the fallout.
Rafael Leao, formerly wearing No. 17, will now step into the iconic No. 7 shirt as Portugal charts a new course without the legendary Ronaldo. The talented yet inconsistent attacker faces increased pressure with the responsibility of carrying on Ronaldo's legacy. After Portugal's elimination from the 2026 World Cup, Leao was the only Portuguese player to publicly apologize to Ronaldo on Instagram. His emotional post reveals the impact Ronaldo's departure has had on the player.
The move to give Leao the legendary No. 7 jersey has sparked controversy and outrage among Ronaldo's fans. They question Ronaldo's decision and express their disappointment with the Portugal coach, Jorge Jesus, for benching Ronaldo during the match against Norway. Ronaldo himself confirmed his departure through an Instagram post, hinting at a conversation with the coach and Portuguese Football Federation president.
Despite the fallout, Portugal remain strong in their group standings and face upcoming matches with renewed challenge.
