São Paulo – Brazilian companies and organizations from the state of Rio Grande do Norte are currently in Egypt to forge connections and partnerships with local businesses and investigate farming and irrigation practices. The trip, organized by the Arab-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce (ABCC) and the Sebraee-RN, aims to provide Brazilian companies with a benchmarking opportunity to study Egyptian irrigation systems.
Many plants in Egypt use water from the Nile River to cultivate various crops, including citrus, strawberries, potatoes, and garlic. The mission also seeks to establish a networking opportunity, connecting Egyptian businesses with initiatives that the state of Rio Grande do Norte may support. Furthermore, the trade agreement between Mercosur and Egypt reached its final stage of tariff elimination in September 2022, eliminating import tariffs between Brazil and Egypt to zero.
This agreement, in effect since 2017, has led to a growth in trade between the two countries. In 2017, Brazil exported USD 2.4 billion to Egypt and imported USD 155.4 million, with sugar, beef, and corn being the main exports. Since then, Brazil's exports to Egypt have increased to USD 3.7 billion, primarily consisting of corn, sugar, and ore.
Egyptian imports from Brazil include fertilizers and petroleum products. The delegation will meet with Brazil's ambassador to Egypt, visit food distribution centers and farms, and learn about various irrigation methods used in Egypt, such as flood irrigation, which is commonly employed by small farmers.
