Young women build skills at Field Marshal Muthoni Market in Nyeri

Eleven-year-old Mary Njugi, a construction intern, is gaining valuable technical skills while working alongside teams on the Field Marshal Muthoni Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP) Market in Nyeri. Her primary tasks have been electrical installations, including piping and droppings, but she has also learned about steel fixing from this hands-on experience.

Njugi says the opportunity has helped her expand her knowledge beyond her electrical training and network with professionals in the field. Seven other interns have joined her on the project, with some even changing their course of study to pursue construction. The Field Marshal Muthoni ESP Market is currently 97 percent complete and aims to provide market infrastructure, public facilities, and employment opportunities for skilled and unskilled workers in the area.

The project has employed around 100 laborers during busy construction days and includes various construction elements like electrical and mechanical installations, cold stores, an ICT hub, ablution block, waste cubicle, parking spaces, masonry, roofing, plastering, tiling, painting, doors, windows, and ceiling works.
