WhatsApp Introduces Parental Controls For Teens, Adds Privacy, Group & Meta AI Settings

New Delhi, Sep 30 - WhatsApp has unveiled a suite of optional parental controls tailored for teenagers, empowering parents with greater oversight over their teenage offspring's privacy settings, group participation, Channels usage, and Meta AI experience on the messaging app. The company envisions these controls as a means to facilitate collaborative decision-making between parents and teens regarding their WhatsApp usage while safeguarding the sanctity of personal conversations.

Under the new parental controls, parents will have the ability to configure privacy settings, such as who can view their teenager's profile photo and who can be added to their groups' roster. Should a teen wish to relax any of these parameters, parental approval is mandatory via a designated PIN. Moreover, parents will be alerted whenever their teenager joins or departs from a group or when the group's size undergoes a significant change.

The controls also extend to the management of Channels, allowing parents to dictate which Status updates their teen can view and who can peruse their own Status updates. In terms of Meta AI, WhatsApp has instituted restrictions for teenagers, offering parents the choice between the default 13+ setting and a more stringent "Limited Content" mode, contingent on the desired degree of oversight.

WhatsApp has slated the introduction of these controls incrementally, with further refinements planned based on input gleaned from families' experiences. The company envisions these measures as a catalyst for open dialogues between parents and teens concerning the judicious utilization of the platform without sacrificing the confidentiality of their private communications.

Notably, these parental controls remain entirely discretionary, affording parents the latitude to ascertain the level of support their teenager requires and to modify or disable the settings at will. WhatsApp reaffirms that even with these controls in place, the privacy of personal messages and calls remains intact, as they are safeguarded by end-to-end encryption.

It is underscored that no entity, including WhatsApp, can intercept or eavesdrop on users' personal conversations. This initiative builds upon WhatsApp's previous forays into parental controls, with the platform having rolled out tools earlier this year aimed at granting parents and guardians the ability to refine communication settings and impose restrictions to ensure that pre-teens predominantly leverage WhatsApp for messaging and voice calls.
