Wetang’ula calls for dedicated African climate fund as continent seeks to cut reliance on external financing

Nairobi, Kenya - National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula has urged the creation of a dedicated African climate fund as the continent strives to reduce its reliance on external financing. In a meeting with members of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), Wetang'ula emphasized the need for Africa to back its climate commitments with domestic resources and stronger legislation.

He argued that Africa's response to climate change should go beyond mere international commitments and focus on building the financial and legal infrastructure required to execute climate policies effectively. Recognizing climate change as one of Africa's most pressing challenges, Wetang'ula commended the PAP for its efforts to tackle the adverse effects of climate change on African communities.

He proposed the establishment of a Climate Change Fund, alongside the development of a Model Law on Climate Change for Africa, stressing that financial support is crucial for transforming climate policies into tangible action. The Speaker also advocated for African nations to leverage their natural resources to finance climate initiatives, enhance domestic capabilities, and decrease dependence on external assistance.

Wetang'ula further implored African lawmakers to adopt a unified stance on climate action and champion legislation that makes environmental violators accountable. He highlighted Kenya's position in international environmental governance and its responsibility to lead environmental protection efforts, emphasizing that the continent must transition from commitments to actions by aligning climate policies with sufficient resources for their successful implementation.
