Uttarakhand’s first glacial lake early-warning system: What it will monitor, why it matters

Uttarakhand has initiated its first early-warning system for glacial lakes, beginning with Vasundhara Tal in Chamoli. The system, set to monitor water levels, weather, snow conditions, water flow, and movement, aims to reduce the risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs). The operation, supported by various agencies, will run from September 29 to October 15.

Glacial lakes in the region pose a significant threat, as demonstrated by the Nepal disaster and the Uttarkashi flash flood in 2022. By the end of the operation, the system will provide continuous monitoring and real-time alerts, aiding in early warnings and disaster preparedness.
