US Coast Guard Cutter Bertholf arrives in Malaysia to strengthen maritime ties

The United States Coast Guard Cutter Bertholf docked in Malaysia for a four-day visit aimed at enhancing security cooperation and regional partnerships. Commander Raphael Sadowitz, a regional coast guard advisor based in Kuala Lumpur, stated that the primary objective was to interact with regional coast guard partners, particularly the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA).

This deployment is part of the US Coast Guard's ongoing duties in the Western Pacific, where the Bertholf has been collaborating closely with MMEA.

During their port call in Port Klang, the crew engaged in tactical exchanges with MMEA officers regarding maritime law enforcement techniques. After a two-hour tour of the 127-meter Legend-class National Security Cutter, which includes various areas such as the bridge, gally, mess hall, officers' mess, recreation area, and helicopter deck, Sadowitz highlighted the ship's capabilities, including a top speed of 28 knots and a range of 12,000 nautical miles.

The vessel has a crew of up to 170 members and routinely undertakes operations in the Pacific, offering the flexibility needed for strategic missions in challenging weather conditions.

The port visit marks the Bertholf's second trip to Malaysia, following a previous stop in 2024. The crew also used their shore leave to explore Kuala Lumpur, visit Jalan Alor, and enjoy local cuisine, including durian. Commander Sadowitz expressed gratitude to the Malaysian government, the Home Affairs Ministry, and the MMEA for their hospitality.

He added that the US Coast Guard aims to maintain regular visits to Malaysia as part of broader regional security efforts across Southeast Asia. The ship was commissioned in Alameda on August 4, 2008, and its motto is "Legends Begin Here."
