Update on Jaxon Kohler Eligibility after California Court Hearing

Michigan State forward Jaxon Kohler attended a California court hearing on Tuesday, September 30, 2023, alongside numerous athletes and coaches regarding the Glancey vs NCAA case. This case involves players from the 2022 class seeking a fifth year of eligibility. The hearing aimed to consider the merits of a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) issued in August, granting temporary eligibility to players.

The judge did not render a decision on the preliminary injunction during the hearing, but it remains in effect until further notice, maintaining Kohler's eligibility. Both Kohler and St. John's head coach Rick Pitino testified in support of the players, with Pitino speaking for an extended period. The plaintiffs' lawyers indicated that the judge would continue the hearing on October 20, during which a ruling on the preliminary injunction would be made.

While not everyone could testify, attendees believed that the hearing was a positive outcome for the players, as they remained eligible and the delay of the case's rulings was not considered detrimental. A favorable preliminary injunction could potentially push the trial date further, possibly into or beyond the season. Yet, the NCAA might reconsider its stance depending on how other cases develop.

The same legal team represented the California plaintiffs in a similar hearing in Indiana, where they obtained a temporary injunction until a December 14 trial date. Given that Indiana is closer to the NCAA's headquarters, the Indiana court's decision may not be as punitive as the California court's. Regardless, Kohler's eligibility remains intact, and further updates on his status are anticipated by October 20.
