UNICEF Ghana launches first Children’s Film Festival to amplify children’s voices

The United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) has introduced the inaugural Children’s Film Festival in Ghana, employing cinema as a tool to highlight children's rights and empower young individuals to express their narratives. The campaign has amassed over 300 submissions, from which 10 young filmmakers and animators have been chosen to craft short films centered on children's rights and the lived experiences of children in Ghana.

These chosen artists will benefit from guidance and backing as they convert their concepts into films prior to the festival set to occur later this year.

According to UNICEF Ghana, the rationale behind leveraging film is its inherent resonance with children. The organization posits that this medium can not only entertain but also educate and mold audiences' perceptions of matters impacting children. This year, however, children are not merely passive observers; their insights are integral to the stories being conceived.

Thus, the initiative is structured to offer young filmmakers a platform to articulate stories that mirror children's realities, while concurrently fostering broader dialogues on children's rights. The trials confronting Ghanaian children are a focal point. UNICEF statistics reveal that in 2024, approximately 23% of infants, or over 170,000 children, failed to secure registration within the first year of their lives.

Furthermore, educational issues persist as a critical concern. UNICEF's data indicate that about 45% of learners achieved below a basic proficiency level in Mathematics, while the score for English was slightly above 50%.
