UK named as leading destination for illicit cannabis exports from Ghana

The United Kingdom has emerged as the primary destination for illicit cannabis exports originating from Ghana, according to the Global Organised Crime Index. The report highlights the appeal of Ghanaian cannabis in European and North American markets, attributing the demand to its high potency. "Renowned for its potency, Ghanaian cannabis has become sought after in North American and European markets, with the UK now the primary destination for the country’s cannabis exports," the report notes.

The index identifies Ghana as one of Africa's major cannabis cultivation regions, with drug seizures representing a significant portion of drug interceptions. Interceptions of cannabis shipments have notably increased at Kotoka International Airport in Accra and in border communities, a trend linked to the growing demand for high-THC cannabis produced in Ghana.

The report also suggests that the expansion of cannabis cultivation in Ghana has been fueled by misunderstandings about the country's legal framework for cannabis use. While the plant is decriminalised for specific medicinal and industrial applications, some individuals have misinterpreted the extent of these legal changes, leading to increased cultivation.

Additionally, the report points out that cannabis cultivation offers an income source for certain Ghanaian communities, reflecting the economic aspects tied to this activity.
