TNPDCL asks High Tension electricity consumers to use gen sets at night hours

The Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) has urged high tension electricity consumers (HT consumers) to utilize generators between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. Officials have been notifying these time frames to HT consumers in various regions over the past two weeks. TNPDCL Secretary N. Pradeep reported that the suggestion varies by location, with some areas recommending the use of generators from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., while others propose 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Despite the TNPDCL's request, consumers have raised concerns.

Chairman of the Southern India Mills’ Association, Durai Palaniswamy, highlighted the unviability of foundries switching to generators, noting that grid power costs ₹7, while generator usage can cost nearly ₹16 per unit. Foundry owner emphasized that this cost increase would be untenable for the manufacturing sector, amounting to ₹30 per unit.

Openend Spinning Mills Association president G. Arulmozhi called for the government to guarantee a continuous power supply to HT consumers, while urged financial assistance to help HT consumers afford generator fuel. Pradeep suggested the government should step in to purchase power immediately once long-term agreements expire next year.
