Time to stop scaring the nation with the communist boogeyman

After six decades of conflict, President Prabowo Subianto now stands at a pivotal moment in Indonesian history. He possesses a unique opportunity to silence the persistent narrative that communism poses a danger to the nation. With his commanding leadership, he should communicate the end of this unending debate and shift the nation's attention towards shared prosperity.

However, the true crises plaguing Indonesia today are far more pressing than the specter of communism. Rampant corruption, unchecked abuses within government institutions, and persistent poverty are the issues that demand immediate attention, not the continued presence of the red threat.

Furthermore, the nation is witnessing a worrying resurgence of militarism, which has not been a part of Indonesia's social and political landscape for over two decades. This growing militarization, combined with the centralization of authority and mounting human rights violations, particularly against marginalized communities like the Papuans, are the urgent realities confronting Indonesia.

Interestingly, even nations with officially communist systems like China and Vietnam have adopted more pragmatic and open economic models, both of which are thriving on the global stage. This comparison suggests that the notion of communism as an insurmountable threat to Indonesia's prosperity is unfounded.

It is worth noting that American President Donald Trump has been vocal in his use of the term "communist" and its implications. In his political speeches, he has labeled political opponents as "hardcore, godless communists" and has even declared communism as a "mortal threat to American liberty," comparing it to the deadliest conflicts in human history.

Therefore, it is high time for President Prabowo to quell these manufactured fears and lead Indonesia towards a future that is free from the weight of unfounded threats and focused on shared prosperity.
