Timberwolves news: Rudy Gobert gets real on Minnesota's new defensive approach

The Minnesota Timberwolves are set to implement a new defensive approach in the upcoming season. Head coach Chris Finch has acknowledged that the team has not yet fully integrated their X’s & O’s, but several players, including defensive anchor Rudy Gobert, have already noted the significant changes coming their way.

Gobert, a four-time defensive player of the year, emphasized that the team's mindset, daily habits, and resilience will be crucial in this new defensive strategy. He stressed the importance of being willing to perform the necessary boring tasks consistently, especially in games that are not particularly meaningful, as they can ultimately make a difference between the top of the West or fighting for home court.

Last season, Minnesota ranked eighth league-wide in defensive rating at 113.5. With the departures of Julius Randle and Naz Reid, the defense, which has traditionally ranked near the top of the association, may experience a similar decline while adopting a different method of achieving it.

Forward Jaden McDaniels, widely regarded as one of the best two-way players in the NBA, expressed his excitement about the new defensive approach. He highlighted the team's rotation, noting that Melo, who is almost as tall as him, has the potential to contribute to the defense. McDaniels also mentioned that the team plans to gradually introduce more off-ball defense, which will ultimately be under the guidance of head coach Finch.
