Stubb Calls On Musk To Expand Starlink Capabilities For Ukraine

Finnish President Alexander Stubb has urged SpaceX owner Elon Musk to expand Starlink coverage for Ukraine. Stubb believes this would aid Ukrainian troops in detecting and targeting Russian ballistic missile launchers, including those in Russia. The Finnish president made this request in an interview with Reuters. Ukraine currently lacks the ability to utilize Starlink in areas where Russian missile launchers are situated, both in Ukraine's temporarily occupied territories and within Russia.

Stubb emphasized that providing Ukrainians with the capability to use Starlink in these regions, for strategic purposes, could potentially save lives. Currently, Starlink does not operate on Russian territory. Ukrainian officials contend that enhanced coverage would enable Ukrainian weapons to be deployed against mobile ballistic missile launchers located hundreds of kilometers from the border.

Stubb also outlined three critical needs for Ukraine as winter approaches: bolstering air defense, safeguarding energy infrastructure, and securing financial support. Stubb mentioned that efforts are underway to assemble a winter aid package for Ukraine. He expressed that he doesn't anticipate the end of Russia's war against Ukraine before the onset of winter.

Ukrainian President Kyrylo Budanov had previously stated that Ukraine requires expanded Starlink capabilities to counter Russian missile systems, noting that current access is inadequate.
