Spoke To Trump, Reviewed Trade, Defence Cooperation: PM Modi

G20 trade ministers commenced talks in Milwaukee on Wednesday, grappling with the looming shadow of US President Donald Trump's global tariffs. The gathering of representatives from the world's 20 major economies, including China, India, Russia, Japan, Canada, and France, is occurring amidst a heightened US-Canada trade war, escalating US tariffs, and investigations into member countries' industrial capacity. Analysts anticipate limited progress due to the persistent trade tensions.

China maintains its stance on export issues, dismissing concerns about its export volume and overcapacity concerns, which are deemed as driving down prices by flooding markets. Meanwhile, countries are striving to forge deals with the Trump administration, with India pushing to finalize its trade pact. Polish finance minister Andrzej Domanski called for the reduction of trade barriers, expressing hope that US partners would adhere to previous agreements.

During the talks, US officials have excluded South Africa while addressing US investigations into overcapacity, which target 16 trading partners, including China, the EU, Japan, and India. US Trade Representative Jamie Scott Greer, who hosts counterparts at the talks, stated that the US is not anti-trade and will consider existing tariff deals.

However, Greer downplayed the urgency of striking a pact with Canada, where certain products now face a US ban due to the trade dispute. Despite the pressure to cooperate with the US, G20 officials will also voice their concerns about the impact of tariffs, with former US trade official Wendy Cutler predicting that some countries will be vocal about being unfairly targeted.
