Sheikh Mohammed pens letter to new generation set to lead change, shape the future

Dubai: Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, penned a heartfelt letter to the upcoming generation poised to drive change, make history and mold the future. In his message, Sheikh Mohammed urged the youth to embrace artificial intelligence and capitalize on the opportunities presented by a world that is rapidly transforming, without losing sight of their core values, identity and humanity.

Titled "A Letter to the New Generation", this piece is part of Sheikh Mohammed's book, "The Letters."

In the letter, Sheikh Mohammed, speaking to the new generation as if they were his sons, daughters and grandchildren, shared lessons and reflections from his decades-long career. He emphasized that each era has its unique spirit, mission, and people. "Your world is not like ours," he told the young generation, highlighting the significant differences in their knowledge, tools, and ambitions compared to earlier generations.

The world they inhabit is globally interconnected, with knowledge no longer confined to borders. Human skills are increasingly intertwined with intelligent technologies and communication algorithms, creating an environment where opportunities are boundless.

Sheikh Mohammed contrasted his own upbringing with the world the new generation now inhabits. He described how his generation grew up with limited geographical and cultural boundaries, whereas today's youth can follow conferences in the United States, work with teams in Asia, and learn from experts in Europe—all while at home. This global connectivity comes with the caveat that some members of the new generation may succumb to boredom, complacency, and haste, despite their superior mental acuity and vast opportunities.

Recalling his own childhood, Sheikh Mohammed noted that the world of his generation was confined to home, school, and playground. Today, the digital age has expanded the horizons of young people's world, connecting them with millions of people through digital platforms. The pace of technological change is exponentially faster than in previous generations, and education has evolved to focus on questioning, creativity, and innovation instead of mere instruction, memorization, and repetition.

For Sheikh Mohammed, the modern world presents young people with tools that are greater, and capabilities that are stronger. He expressed optimism about the new generation's potential, believing that their broader knowledge and heightened awareness will enable them to achieve feats beyond the imagination of their parents and grandparents.

However, he cautioned that success should not be measured by replicating the past but by acquiring the skills necessary for the future. He stressed that values remain timeless and should not be sacrificed for progress. Honesty, trustworthiness, justice, tolerance, compassion, and respect for others remain essential foundations of human life.

Ultimately, Sheikh Mohammed emphasized that a sense of cultural identity is crucial for navigating an increasingly interconnected world, as those without cultural roots risk losing a sense of belonging to the future.
