In 1981, Yash Chopra was struggling to find a lead actress for his film Silsila, which centered around a theme of infidelity. He had initially cast Parveen Babi and Smita Patil, but both dropped out just days before filming began. Rekha readily agreed to join, but Jaya Bachchan was hesitant due to rumors of Amitabh and Rekha's romantic involvement.
