Roman Anthony removed from Red Sox’ AL Wild Card Game 1 vs. Yankees

In the opening game of the AL Wild Card Series between the Red Sox and Yankees on Tuesday, leadoff hitter Roman Anthony was removed from the lineup in the sixth inning due to hand discomfort. Andruw Monasterio pinch-hit for Anthony with one out in the inning against Yankees starter Cam Schlittler. The 22-year-old had missed 101 games due to a torn ligament under his right ring finger during the previous month.

Anthony experienced discomfort in the same hand during the game, leading to his removal. Manager Chad Tracy stated that Anthony took two swings and his hand "flared on him," and the discomfort became too severe. When asked about Anthony postgame, Red Sox media relations officials confirmed that he had already left Yankee Stadium.

Tracy mentioned that Anthony has felt a "zinger" in the hand occasionally since returning but that today's discomfort was more serious. It remains unclear whether Anthony will play in Game 2 on Wednesday. Anthony went 0-for-2 with two strikeouts in two at-bats before exiting the game.
