Rohit Sharma goes past 12,000 ODI runs, joins Virat Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar in elite club

On Wednesday, Rohit Sharma achieved a significant milestone by becoming the third Indian to score 12,000 runs in men's ODIs, joining Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar in the elite club. He is currently the seventh batsman overall to surpass the 12,000-run mark and the third-fastest overall in terms of innings, trailing only his longtime teammate Kohli.

Rohit reached this milestone during his 282nd ODI innings while Kohli reached it in his 242nd match. Sharma accomplished the feat with a single off Roston Chase in the 16th over and went on to score his 35th ODI century before being dismissed at 101 off just 75 balls. The Indian opener's innings saw a mammoth 255-run stand with captain Shubman Gill, which helped India dismiss the West Indies' target of 406 in a match.

Despite some scrutiny over his form and the emergence of younger players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rohit Sharma remains one of the greatest batsmen of all time in limited-overs cricket. He is the first and only player to have scored a double century more than once in ODI cricket, having achieved this accomplishment three times. Additionally, Rohit holds the record for the highest score by a player in the format, scoring 264 off 173 balls against Sri Lanka in November 2014.

Rohit Sharma has been vice-captain to Virat Kohli in limited overs and took over as the full-time skipper of the team in December 2021. He led India to the 2023 World Cup final, where they lost to Australia. Later, Rohit led India to victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup, after which he retired from the shortest format along with Kohli.

Rohit Sharma took over as India's Test captain in February 2022, but his Test career concluded with a disappointing tour of Australia for both him as a batsman and as a captain. He eventually announced his retirement from Test cricket later that year in 2024.
