'Revolutionary scenario' - German women's Bundesliga mulls play-offs

The German Women's Bundesliga is contemplating the implementation of play-offs for championship, promotion, and relegation after selling media rights for the first time since splitting from the German Football Federation. This change will be effective at the start of the next season, with the Bundesliga issuing TV rights tenders that include a revolutionary scenario involving play-off games for the first time.

The proposal is attractive to broadcasters who can market the decisive play-offs more effectively than regular league games. An evolutionary scenario, which maintains the current format of one round of home and away matches, is also on the table. Bayern Munich, the double double winners, initially opposed play-offs for the title, stating that the best-performing team over the season should become champions.

However, Wolfsburg, a perennial runner-up, also opposes the potential change to the format. The clubs are scheduled to discuss the play-offs idea at a general meeting on November 30 after concluding talks with media companies.
