Reddit has announced plans to eliminate support for RSS feeds and end public API access by March 2027. The platform cited automated abuse and large-scale scraping as the reasons for this decision. RSS, or Really Simple Syndication, has been a popular way for users and applications to access updates from websites in a standardized format.

However, Reddit believes it has become a common surface for abusive activities. The shutdown of RSS feeds will take effect on November 13, 2026. This move is driven by the fact that Reddit's user-generated content has become a profitable source of revenue through AI licensing deals. Moderators who have relied on RSS channels for alerts are being advised to shift to the Discord Relay Devvit app.

Reddit also recommends moderators review their setups before the shutdown date to avoid disruptions. The company stated that there is no viable replacement for RSS feeds outside of moderators' communities. In addition to deprecating RSS, Reddit is ending its public API access, which will impact tools and services that rely on Reddit's data for programmatic access, including social listening products, research tools, and AI assistants.

The end of public API access will also prevent commercial deals with Reddit for its data. The company is adding safeguards to its Old Reddit version and limiting access to logged-in moderators and recent users. Developers with approved third-party apps and bots have until January 12, 2027, to register them with Reddit to avoid disruption.
