Raila Odinga Mausoleum nears to be unveiled next week

The Defence Ministry of Kenya has announced that the construction of the Raila Amolo Odinga Mausoleum in Bondo, Siaya County, is over 95 percent complete. The project, a collaboration between the Ministry of Defence and the National Museums of Kenya (NMK), is set to be unveiled next week in commemoration of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga.

Defence Principal Secretary Patrick Mariru led a team to Kang'o ka Jaramogi, the site of the mausoleum, on September 30, 2026, to evaluate the progress and confirm its readiness for the unveiling ceremony.

During the inspection, Mariru and his team were accompanied by officials from the NMK, including Director General Prof Mary Gikungu. The Ministry of Defence and NMK are jointly implementing the project, following a directive from President William Ruto. Notable attendees included the Chief in Charge of Special Projects at Defence Headquarters, Brigadier Titus Sokobe, NMK Chairman Edwin Abonyo, and various government officers.

The visit underscores the Ministry's commitment to completing the mausoleum as the government prepares for the upcoming memorial events in honor of the former Prime Minister. The mausoleum, set to be located at the historic Kang'o ka Jaramogi, the ancestral home of Raila's father and Kenya's first Vice President, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, is nearing completion as the nation prepares to pay tribute to Odinga's legacy.
