Qld treasurer calls for GST overhaul at National Press Club

Queensland Treasurer David Janetzki has criticized the federal government's decision not to change the GST deal with Western Australia, calling for a reevaluation of the GST allocation system. Janetzki's remarks came during a speech at the National Press Club, which followed the release of the Productivity Commission's interim report, which suggested the federal government should scrap its arrangement with Western Australia.

Public consultations for the Productivity Commission's review are ongoing, with the final report expected in December. Janetzki has long advocated for a fairer GST share for Queensland, which has seen a $2.3 billion reduction in GST revenue for the 2025-26 financial year. He urged the government to consider a 25% discount when assessing mining revenue, arguing it would address the volatility and policy neutrality issues created when the GST system redistributes highly concentrated and volatile mining revenues.
