Qatari mediators press peace deal between US, Iran

Qatari diplomats are endeavoring to broker a peace agreement between the United States and Iran, despite President Donald Trump's assertions that he held no interest in easing sanctions or releasing frozen Iranian funds in exchange for concessions on Iran's nuclear program. The Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Majed al-Ansari, stated that the nation is actively exchanging communications with both sides in pursuit of a mutually beneficial resolution and averting the repercussions of the ongoing conflict.

The US and Iran have been unable to break the cycle of their eight-month-long war, which has intensified following discussions at the UN General Assembly meeting in New York. However, these talks have not culminated in an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Qatar has once more taken on the role of a potential peace broker, following a supporting role in the June memorandum of understanding that facilitated a temporary ceasefire.

During separate meetings with Qatari mediators on Monday, US President Donald Trump reiterated his stance that Iran must not acquire a nuclear weapon and that the war would conclude soon. Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian, in a recent CBS interview, expressed readiness for negotiations on nuclear issues and other concerns, but refused to yield to coercion.

Despite Iran's conventional forces being weakened and its economy deteriorating, Tehran has retaliated with missile and drone attacks on US allies in the Gulf and by impeding oil tanker traffic through the strategic Strait of Hormuz, leading to increased global energy prices. In response to the escalating situation, the US government announced the provision of up to 40 million barrels of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to energy companies.

Additionally, the US imposed sanctions on 10 individuals and entities involved in procuring weapons and components for Iran.
