Qatari Forum for Authors holds seminar on 'The Intellectual and The Other'

The Qatari Forum for Authors, backed by the Ministry of Culture, hosted an intellectual seminar titled "The Intellectual and The Other" at the Ministry's headquarters on Wednesday. The seminar, led by writer and researcher Rawda Al Hammadi, attracted notable attendees from the cultural and intellectual domains. Al Hammadi commenced the discussion by providing an in-depth analysis of the concept of "the Other," emphasizing that it is not exclusively a distant or antagonistic entity, but rather any individual who differs from oneself.

She argued that the intellectual's grasp of "the Other" is rooted in their self-definition and understanding.

The seminar aimed to define what it means to be a genuine intellectual and their responsibility in promoting critical thinking regarding "the Other" beyond preconceived notions and stereotypes. Al Hammadi highlighted that the seminar was influenced by her book, "Postcolonial Critical Studies of the Qatari Novel," published by the Ministry of Culture and the Qatari Forum for Authors as part of the "Seeds of Knowledge" initiative.

Moreover, the seminar delved into psychological and social factors that transform difference into anxiety and exclusion, rather than embracing diversity. It also explored the theme of "the intellectual and the Other" within the context of the digital age and social media, contemplating whether these platforms truly bring people closer together.
