Pupil hurt after setting off fireworks at Muar primary school

A 12-year-old student in Muar, Johor, suffered burns after setting off fireworks inside a primary school, according to Muar police chief Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz. The explosions, which occurred around 11am, caused a commotion among pupils and staff, leading to an orderly evacuation to a safe area and an immediate call to the police. The injured boy was promptly taken to Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital for treatment, where he was later discharged for outpatient care.

Upon investigation, the Muar police bomb disposal unit and Johor police forensic team confirmed that there were no additional explosive threats. A preliminary probe revealed the young boy's involvement was likely influenced by violent online content. Police seized several items from the school and the boy's residence for further analysis. Six witnesses were also interviewed in the course of the investigation.

The boy has been remanded until October 3, following a ruling from the Muar Magistrates' Court. The case is being examined under Section 436 of the Penal Code, which covers mischief by fire or explosive substances, and Sections 6 and 8 of the Explosives Act 1957, pertaining to causing explosions that could endanger lives or properties, and the unauthorized possession or creation of explosives under suspicious circumstances.

The police have requested the public to refrain from disseminating any images, videos, or personal details about the student, given the sensitive nature of the case involving a child.
