PPP ethics panel reduces lawmaker's suspension over scuffle with floor leader

Seoul, September 30 (Yonhap) -- The main opposition People Power Party (PPP) has reduced the party membership suspension imposed on lawmaker Kwon Young-jin from 18 months to one year, effectively clearing the path for him to seek the party's nomination in the upcoming 2028 general elections. Initially, the PPP ethics committee had suspended Kwon for 18 months, which would have barred him from running on the PPP ticket during the parliamentary elections.

However, upon requesting a review of the disciplinary action, the committee decided to impose a one-year suspension instead.

The controversy surrounding Kwon's suspension stems from an incident in July where he allegedly grabbed PPP floor leader Jeong Jeom-sig by the collar while protesting parliamentary committee assignments. Following the committee's announcement of the reduced suspension, Kwon expressed acceptance of the decision and apologized for causing public concern in a post on his Facebook page.
