OU football coach Brent Venables stands by John Mateer: 'John's our starting quarterback'
OU football coach Brent Venables says John Mateer remains the starting quarterback ahead of the Red River Rivalry against Texas.
Norman — Oklahoma University football coach Brent Venables has reaffirmed his support for starting quarterback John Mateer. When informed that backups Whitt Newbauer and Bowe Bentley had taken many reps during Wednesday's practice, Venables said, "I have no idea," if either of them would play against Texas in the upcoming Red River Rivalry.
"John's our starting quarterback," Venables stated, acknowledging Mateer's solid performance since the bye week following a loss to Georgia, where he had turned the ball over three times.
