Opiyo Wandayi: Construction of Ksh2.23 trillion Lamu refinery to begin immediately

Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote declared the Sh2.2 trillion Lamu Oil Refinery as the second-fastest project to commence operations, following its conceptualization in April. Dangote emphasized the rapid progress of the project during the groundbreaking ceremony in Lamu, Kenya. The refinery, a joint venture involving Dangote Industries and the Kenyan government, is anticipated to revolutionize Kenya's petroleum sector and enhance the nation's standing as a regional energy hub.

The ceremony was attended by Presidents William Ruto and Yoweri Museveni, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, and Benin's Minister of Economy and Finance Romuald Wadagni. With an estimated value of Sh2.2 trillion, the refinery is designed to process up to 700,000 barrels of crude oil daily, making it one of the largest planned petroleum refineries in Africa.

The facility aims to supply refined petroleum products to Kenya and other regional markets, potentially diminishing East Africa's dependence on imported petroleum. The development is also expected to contribute to industrialization, job creation, and economic growth in Lamu and the surrounding regions. The groundbreaking ceremony signifies a crucial milestone, following extensive planning and negotiations between the government and the Dangote Group.

However, the project has faced criticism from some Lamu residents concerning land acquisition, compensation, and public participation, issues that have been addressed in legal proceedings related to the project. The refinery is poised to play a pivotal role in Kenya's long-term energy strategy, although its ultimate impact will hinge on construction progress, financing, and the development of supporting infrastructure.

Dangote's comments on the project's swift launch highlight the accelerating pace of preparations that have propelled the multibillion-shilling investment into the construction phase.
