‘Nothing worked for us’ – Gideon Mensah takes responsibility for Gambia defeat

Ghana's Black Stars captain Gideon Mensah has admitted that "nothing worked" for his team during their 4-2 loss to The Gambia in Accra. The left-back, who was in charge of the Black Stars during the match, acknowledged his own responsibility for the defeat. "Today was one of those days when nothing worked for us. As captain, I also take responsibility for the defeat," Mensah stated.

Mensah conceded a penalty that aided The Gambia's comeback and also lost possession in the build-up to the third goal. However, he urged the public to consider the circumstances surrounding the current squad, especially the influx of new players due to several withdrawals. Mensah noted that new players require time to adjust to the team's mentality.

Despite the loss, which leaves Ghana with no points from their first two Group C qualifiers, including a 2-0 defeat to Côte d'Ivoire in Bouaké, Mensah praised the players who accepted their call-ups and represented the nation despite the challenging circumstances. The Black Stars now face the task of regrouping as they strive to regain their aspirations of qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
