Not unicorns, lifelines: 5 Northeast startups building for problems they grew up with

From villages lacking dependable electricity to AI tailored for Northeast Indian languages, a new wave of entrepreneurs is developing technology to solve challenges they have witnessed firsthand. During a recent conference in Sikkim, technology leaders, investors, policymakers, and academics from all eight Northeastern states gathered to discuss how innovation can tackle local obstacles.

The event featured the Digi SAPNE 2.0 Demo Day, the North East Entrepreneurs Dialogue, and the Entrepreneurs Meet. Despite their diverse focus areas, all five startups shared a common thread: addressing problems deeply rooted in their respective communities.

Kiita Dumbang Mountain Winds, founded by Mem Modi in Paki Modi, Arunachal Pradesh, tackles the persistent challenge of unreliable electricity in remote, hilly regions. The company has evolved from Vertical Axis Wind Turbine systems to a decentralized renewable energy intelligence platform, which integrates multiple energy sources, IoT, and AI-based monitoring.

This approach not only generates power locally but also fosters local maintenance capabilities and manufacturing. Modi's vision emphasizes the importance of building local knowledge alongside clean energy access.

Labdig, a startup co-founded by Dr. Chayanika Deka Nath and Dr. Pabitra Nath in Assam, aims to bridge the gap between laboratory infrastructure and field work. Their Moboscope is a smartphone-based microscopy system that operates independently of external power or specialized laboratories. This device has applications in education, healthcare, agriculture, and field settings, providing a cost-effective solution for scientific analysis in resource-constrained environments.

Founded in Tripura, HN Technovations addresses the stark contrast between plentiful water and the scarcity of safe drinking water in flood-prone areas. The company's InstaWater systems purify contaminated water at the point of use, utilizing 3kg rechargeable units, petrol-pump-operated systems, and solar-hybrid smart filters. Since launching in 2019, the technology has provided clean drinking water to over 3,500 families in Assam, Tripura, and Punjab, while also reducing plastic waste.

Meghalaya-based MWire Labs is working to bridge the language technology gap in the region. Their NE-BERT model, trained on 8.3 million sentences across nine Northeast Indian languages, demonstrates superior performance compared to other language models. Additionally, MWire Labs has developed Lemka, a speech-AI system that enables local-language interaction for six Northeast Indian languages.

This technology aims to provide accessible digital services for users in settings where typing, reading, or reliable connectivity are limited.

Finally, Akumen AI, based in Imphal, Manipur, is developing affordable assistive technology for visually impaired individuals. Their flagship product, INSIGHT, is an AI-enabled wearable device designed to read text, identify objects and faces, recognize currencies, and provide audio assistance. The company is committed to making assistive technology more accessible while leveraging AI and computer vision to support people with disabilities across 22 Indian languages.
